The Newest Contender for Chris Paul & Dwight Howard is...

by vipseats June 10, 2013 15:20

Last week, the Atlanta Hawks raised some eyebrows after a letter promoting season ticket sales boasted the names of Chris Paul and Dwight Howard.  There is one problem here and it's that neither Paul, nor Howard play in Atlanta.  The two marquee free agents for this summer don't have negotiating rights yet as the NBA Finals are still taking place.  Was this Atlanta's statement to the NBA that they are serious about a title run and competing with division rival Miami? Was this free agent tampering? Did the club have (illegal) talks with either player or agent?

Well until the offseason starts, NBA teams will jockley for position to sign either or both Los Angeles stars (Paul with the Clippers and Howard with the Lakers).  The latest team to throw their hat in the race is apparently the Houston Rockets.  According to the Houston Chronicle, the Rockets may want to add both big names this summer as they see the West as wide open and for the taking.  The Rockets finished in the final playoff spot in 2013 and could be poised for a HUGE season if they can land both stars.  We saw the same thing two years ago as there were as many as 4 or 5 teams that stated their intentions to pursue Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, before Miami's coup and subsequent 3 NBA Finals appearances in a row.  How will this summer play out and will Paul and Howard end up together? All it takes is one summer to turn a franchise around!
